Garrett Eckbo studied landscape architecture at UC Berkeley graduating in 1935. He then attended Harvard University's Graduate School of Design where with classmates Dan Kiley and James Rose led the "Harvard Revolution," ushering in the modern period in landscape design. Following graduation in 1938, Eckbo worked as a landscape architect for Norman Bel Geddes on the General Motors Pavilion for the 1939 World's Fair in New York and for the Farm Security Administration.
